Welcome Mike!

We are delighted to be welcoming Mike Lawford to our Stewards team. So we can get to know him a little better, we asked Mike some questions:

How long have you been coming to High Street?

I have been coming to High Street since 2019, when I returned to Methodism after a 45-year break. In my time in Harpenden before that I had worshipped down at All Saints on Station Road.

Why did you decide to become a steward?

Mark approached me after a service and asked if I had ever thought about being a steward. I hadn’t, but then images of the immense power, high social status and personal glory that I presumed came with the role filled my head and I couldn’t say no!

What do you do when you're not being a steward?

Sometimes I’m not truly sure now that I’m retired - finding my way in a new world along with my wife, two cats and nine chickens - and our grown-up children all away from home now. There is a lot of digging on the allotment, playing trains, doing other church-related things etc. But I do seem to have garnered a reputation of talking a lot to other people (according to my long-suffering friends and acquaintances!)

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

When parallel parking, go alongside the car in front, then reverse back on full lock until your back offside wheel aligns with the outside of the car parked behind, then turn the front wheels round on full lock the other way to bring you round straight - keeping an eye on not hitting the car in front. My life has improved no end knowing that!

How can your church family support you in your new role?

Please forgive me when my memory freezes and your name becomes temporarily unretrievable scuttling away to hide in the back reaches of my brain. This sometimes happens even when I’ve known you for ages – and always at the most socially awkward moment possible!

Please do say ‘hello’ to Mike and support and pray for him as he starts this new role.
