Celebrating 40 years as the Church’s organist

On Sunday 14th June it was Music Sunday and this year we used it to mark the 40th anniversary of David Noble as Church Organist at High Street.

David began his musical interest as a child with piano lessons under the guidance of Cryil Oldham, who was then church organist at High Street. Although David had a keen interest in the organ and was eager to learn, Cyril wisely insisted he first become fully proficient at the piano. At 15, David began formal organ lessons, soon playing for afternoon baptism services and later for evening worship in the village chapels. As he developed his skills, David began to assist with services here at High Street, all while singing in the church choir and continuing to play around the Circuit whenever needed. By the early 1980s he had become deputy organist, taking on more regular duties at High Street, and in May 1986 he was appointed church organist, a role he has carried with dedication, faithfulness, and remarkable musicianship ever since.

To mark this milestone, a new anthem was commissioned. The piece, Shout for Joy! written by Grayston Ives, was sung for the first time at the 11am service on Sunday 14th June 2026. Thanks to those of you who joined us to offer our thanks as a church for David’s 40 years of service.
