Big Theme
At our recent Big Day In, we explored together some of the big themes of Christian discipleship - themes that are not simply ideas to think about, but ways of living that shape who we are becoming as God’s people. Themes that speak not only to Sunday worship, but to everyday life: to our workplaces and homes, our choices and relationships, our hopes and fears for the world.
In this new four-part sermon series, we will return to those themes and explore them more deeply through scripture, prayer, conversation, and reflection.
Together, these themes remind us that discipleship is not about perfection or easy answers. It is about learning to walk in the Way of Jesus - step by step, day by day - as individuals and as a community seeking to live faithfully in our own time and place.
Over these weeks, may we discover again that following Christ is not simply about believing certain things, but about becoming a people shaped by justice, wisdom, compassion, prayer, and hope.
7 June - caring for creation
We begin with Caring for Creation, rediscovering humanity’s calling not to dominate the earth carelessly, but to nurture and steward God’s good creation with gratitude and responsibility. At a time of environmental anxiety and ecological crisis, how can Christians live with hope, humility, and care? (Genesis 1: 26-31 and Genesis 2: 8-15)
14 June - learning our faith
We will then reflect on Learning Our Faith - recognising that discipleship is a lifelong journey of growing in understanding, wisdom, and spiritual maturity. Faith is not something we simply inherit once and for all; it is something we continue to explore, question, deepen, and live.
21 june - challenging injustice
From there, we turn to Challenging Injustice, hearing the prophetic cry of Amos for justice to “roll down like waters” and listening again to Jesus’ declaration in Nazareth that he came to bring good news to the poor and freedom to the oppressed. In a world marked by inequality, division, violence, and fear, what might faithful discipleship look like? (Amos 5: 21-24 and Luke 4: 16-20)
28 June - Praying Each Day
Finally, we will consider the practice of Praying Daily, returning to Jesus’ teaching in the Lord’s Prayer. Prayer is not an escape from the world, but a way of becoming rooted in God’s presence within it - shaped by grace, sustained through difficulty, and opened to God’s transforming work. (Matthew 6: 5-15)
