In The Beginning

Genesis: The big overture to the Bible. The Act One of Christian faith. It’s a book many of us will be familiar with, but perhaps one we also look on with a certain detachment due to its massive scope and its focus on ancient faith. Some of it’s passages can seem so far removed from our lives today that they appear irrelevant.

But that does it a disservice: This remarkable book sets the scene for the rest of the Bible, and points forward to the New Testament in remarkable ways. It’s themes are the same that fill the rest of the Bible. It’s characters and their actions speak to our own life experiences today.

Far from being a relic, an ancient origin story long since dismissed, it does in fact have much to say to us. It brings us good news, it promises hope, and it invites us to live and learn attentively as we discover who God is, what God is doing and why God does it.

This in turn can lead us to discover who we are, what we are doing and why.
